long weekend
30 June 2009

Sorry about the lack of updates this past weekend slash beginning of the week! Alex and I have been out of town for a friend's wedding, and I'm still recuperating! Sleeping in well deserved. And since Wednesday July 1st marks our 6th anniversary (I know, barf) we decided to make a little weekend trip of it! The actual wedding was held in Ely, MN and the reception at the Giants Ridge Lodge and Ski Resort. It was awesome, delicious food, lots of dancing, and lots of Alex catching up with his college buddies (aw). Then the next morning we stopped for the day in Duluth and did some antiquing, walking along the boardwalk and having mexican fooood for lunch, yummyyy! Here are some highlights of the trip: GIANT BEEF JERKY, sugar penguins, lots of vintage clothing, views of the lake and beer.

More exciting things to come, ya here!

mmmmmaybe?

did someone just send me a shout out on the current? Mark Wheat just said that "...this next one from Metric is going out to Allison who's workin hard in the lab today." If it was you, THANKS! Either way, it was awesome, and kind of like when you see a missed connections that could have been you. Nice to think it was for you, haha!

some failed attempts at jumping pictures
23 June 2009

Worked at Little Bean Studio today, and thought I would try to take some jumping pictures on the sweep before I left. Not successful. But still kinda funny! Check them out along with some outfit deets on Flickr.

romper time
22 June 2009

Emma and I went to the beach after lunch today and it was AWESOME. We went to Lake Harriet for a change, because we usually go to Lake Calhoun, and we just figured that the Calhoun beaches would be packed today. Very hot and sweaty, and a sweet little girl tried to pilfer Emma's phone, but all in all a very good idea indeed! And I got a chance to wear my silly little romper with snaps at the sides and straps. So cute.

romper/swimsuit coverup: vintage, from Blacklist Vintage
belt: thrifted, from Goodwill

Today is hot. A steamy 87 degrees already, and Alex and I are going to Rock the Garden at the Walker!! I am so excited to sun myself on a large blanket, drink lots of beer, and meet our good friend Kate from High School there!

This wont happen though until I do several other things, like ship some Hello Ladies items, have an interview at American Apparel, get some film and a new battery for this retro Rollei, and HAVE SOME LUNCH... I cant forget to have some lunch!

deets:
tank: damsel from Urban
stretch skirt: Urban clearance
cardigan (just in case?): ON clearance
sandals: Urban
(oh embarrassing, my whole outfit is from Urban!)
lots of vintage cocktail rings
I also felt like this outfit needed a necklace, but then I thought I'd get too sweaty. So no necklace....

deer(dot)luv

What, a plastic deer doesn't just scream 'fashion blog' to you? I know, I know.

I'll be playing around with the header and things for awhile, eff why eye. Let me know if you have any suggestions, or if you know how to get my post titles to link to the individual posts again. That one's been bothering me for EVAH...

goings on
17 June 2009

Its strange. Lately, Ive been feeling like there have been a lot of things going on for me, and at the same time not a lot going on at all! Working ses has been both super boring during the day and hard to juggle at the same time. Maybe its because I've been trying to fill all my spare time with things. Here are some of the things: First I had to (HAD TO?!? wooho!) go shopping for a dress to wear to Tony and Charity's wedding next weekend (friends of Alex's and mine). I was almost going to buy one of the dresses on clearance at Banana Republic the other day, but they were just too expensive. I couldn't quite afford them. Then I stopped by Via's Vintage yesterday to just look around, and of course I found several gorgeous things.

I ended up getting this one when the sales girl offered it to me for $15 less than was on the tag because quote "You HAVE to get that dress, it is so perfect on you!" Well, duh. Now I had to...

I also got a 60's silk sleepshirt for a few bucks. I love the fabric and fit of it, but it also had WAY too much lace on it for my taste. I brought it home a cut lace off of the collar, sleeves, chest AND pockets. Before and After below. Phew... much better now.

Lastly, Ive found several new blogs and websites that I didnt know existed! I always "run into" caroline@goodwiu on wardrobe_remix, and just realized that she has a blog. And I really like it becae she also posts a lot of amazing photography in addition to outfits, store updates and inspiration. Hi Caroline!!

Through her I found this great jewelry designer called Bario-Neal. "Bario-Neal jewelry is handcrafted in Philadelphia with reclaimed precious metals; ethically-sourced stones; and low-impact, environmentally conscious practices. 1% of all Bario-Neal profits is donated to the Association for Responsible Mining." SO TOTALLY UNIQUE ECO-FRIENDLY AND COOL.

Other blogs and things I've found: Shoptoast via Fashion Toast, Shoelust, Sea of Shoes, oh my gosh that's enough...

Peace out.

mcad summer expressions session one
15 June 2009

Summer in Minneapolis for me means MCAD's summer expressions pre-college program for high school students. I didnt get to go when I was in high school (much to my dismay), so working as a Resident Assistant every year is sort of making up for lost time (and super intense fun working time)! I wont go into detail, but I will say that I have to stay in the apartments and live with the students for four weeks, which means a change of scenery for my wardrobe remix pictures! It also means cool clothing, and not a lot of it. Hanging out and sunning on the grass and walking to Little Tijuana's for dinner with co-workers. Its always a good time.

On a side note, Hello Ladies Vintage League has been doing very well these last couple of days! I just wanted to quickly thank any of you out there who've been browsing our shop (and reading our blogs), we really are having a blast with this and hope we can keep this up for as long as possible! ///Allison

hello ladies etsy update!
12 June 2009

Hi everyone, I have been having some serious vintage finds lately. So today I am updating the Hello Ladies Vintage League Shop with lots of beautiful new goodies! You all need to check this out. That's if I can get everything listed tonight!! Here is a sneak peak!

Besides that, and besides the fact that I had so much I wanted to do today (like paint my chipping nails over again) that I didn't get done, it's been a pretty good week. Boring, but good.

I'll also have some thrifting and vintage adventure posts coming up. And hopefully some art-related posts. I really have to get going on my work! Now is the time, and I've been taking advantage of it!

new space for little beans

Little Bean Photo, where I work as a digital assistant, is moving to a new location! And when I say "new" location, I really mean "a" location. For six years, Elissa has been running her photography business out of her home office, and it was finally time for a change!

So this is a little tour of what the new place on Excelsior and Grand looks like so far. A work in progress, but nevertheless, totally awesome. Its nice having all of this light, and a Dunn Brothers right next door (or wait, that could be dangerous!)!

Whats new with you?

150th post
10 June 2009

I couldnt decide what to post about today for my 150th blog post, so I decided to just throw in a little bit of everything. Get ready for a little bit of schizophrenia...

FIRST OFF, I wanted to share these awesome shoe-booties that I got from DSW the other day (I hope you can see them okay). They were super cheap in the first place, but I also had a DSW rewards $10 off coupon to use (finally!!) so I allowed myself to purchase them. I know I know, they may be a little cliche by now, as they are the knock-offy type that have been all over the blogosphere (and DSW's commercials ew), BUT I STILL LUF THEMMM SO MUCH.

I wore this to the Guthrie last night for "The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Socialism and Capitalism with a Key to the Scriptures" by Tony Kushner. Actually very good despite being 3+ hours longgg. See it if you can (Im also looking forward to seeing "Caroline, or Change" but thats another story).

dress: Urban
cardigan: Thakoon for Target, thrifted from Everyday People
random tights
shoes: zigi Soho, from DSW
clutch: Alfani, thrifted from Opitz Outlet for $5!

In other news, I saw these here things as Tatters today as I was walking around Lyn-Lake (if anyone can suggest some good time-killing free things to do during the day, I would much appreciate it. I get so bored so easily). I can very proudly say that I didnt buy a single thing, and I didnt even have to leave my wallet in the car not to (let me brag - this is big). The cropped plaid blouse down there automatically reminded me of the APC summer "Madras" line. I think it would look so super duper cute with high-waisted jean shorts and a floppy hat. Also, those mustard-colored pants MAY LOOK kinda droopy and dated on the hanger I know, but actually they were a perfectt fit, and very Audrey Hepurn-Mary Tyler Moore-crop pant-esque. And that color just made them even better...

And last but not least, I have been searching for a little more grown-up porch furniture as of late. Alex and I plan to spend a good many summer day and night hanging out on the porch with friends, and so we may need more seating (or at least thats what Ive been telling myself). Not long after I had formulated the idea of getting a vintage sofa-style porch set from the 50s or 60s, do I spot this advertisement in the hardware store! Now obviously Im not in a place to shell out $675 buckaroos on a porch set, but arent these guys just DARLING??!

I wish... Maybe all you craigslist whores (like me) can keep your eyes peeled for me. Im looking for something a little more in the range of $25-$100. (Hey, there are people out there that dont know what they got, right???)

Today was my first day of officially being unemployed, as the theatre's season ended yesterday. Hopefully I will find a job-type thing soon, but for today I was lounging in my jammies and underwear watching various CSI shows all day and only got dressed to go pick up my work from an exhibition closing. Alex helped me when he got home from work. (PS: It was Connections: Documenting our Social and Cultural Links at the Mpls Photo Center.

Soon, we will make a delicious dinner of brats and beans! Too bad it isnt less overcast outside so that we could sit and enjoy our meal on the porch. Oh well, still delicious!! ps: My next post will be my 150th! What should I talk about!?!?

cardigan: H&M, $5
button front thermal: the boy's
jeans: joe's jeans, thrifted from Everyday People
favorite leather bag: vintage, from Everyday People
shoes: Steve Madden (I haven't been finding as many excuses to wear them as I had hoped, since they are so fancy. So I have been trying to incorporate fancy heels into my more casual outfits lately, how am I doin?)

I am working on making my own version of the aforementioned shoe jewelry. Stay tuned/wish me luck!

summer scarf
05 June 2009

I've never tried the 'loose summertime scarf' thing, but I found this at Savers the other day, and loved it. It is so light and soft!! Also, I'm a really big scarf person in the fall/winter (hello, two big boxes of scarves that have to go into storage still!), so why not in the spring/summer?

This is what I wore when Alex and I went to an 'all you can eat' Twins baseball game on Tuesday night, and stuffed ourselves silly with gross ball park food. It was AWESOME... and we won.

scarf: thrifted, Savers
tunic: Urban
tank underneath: Urban
big cocktail ring: H&M
jeans: thrifted, originally from PacSun
sandals: Urban
bag: vintage, Everyday People

edgy booooties

I am really loving these ankle boots. I saw them at Urban Outfitters today on sale, but they only had one pair, in a size 9 (Not that I would have shelled out the 100 smackers for them anyways)! But I have been keeping my eye out for a big fat chunky heeled bootie with some sort of edgy cutout or detail. Not the type of thing I've been able to find thrifting, but I'm still hoping!! Other versions I've seen out there in the blog-o-sphere and loved can be found here, here and here.

Maybe someone out there knows of a similar, but more affordable version?

vintage leather bag
01 June 2009

Lately, I've been going through lots of new bags. In retrospect, I think I may have been trying to find the perfect bag NOT for the way it looks, but the way it functions. I usually buy bags for the opposite reason. This new bag is perfect.

I got it at the Everyday People, and not only is it BEAUTIFUL soft vintage leather, but the size and shape is perfect for fitting my laptop in it when I want, and the handles are short enough to carry it in my hand, but long enough to carry it over my shoulder as well. And it has just enough silver detailing to make it edgy without it being overly studded. I don't think I could carry a studded bag everywhere, as much as everyone (including me) loves this bag (or this bag even). It's got cool little clips on the front pockets and even on the zipper! Its sort of like security!

I've got so many little things to do today. One of which is to call a friend from high school and tell her that I can't come to her wedding... balls. Then I get to help my mom post some things to craigslist. More balls. Then I have to figure out if my new insurance will reimburse me for the $80 I paid for birth control this month. Super huge balls. And it just goes on like that for awhile... Ill let you know how it goes?
