For a night downtown with my baby (we went to Solera for their killer sangria, and not to Too Much Love after all - Katie, you never called me).

dress: Richard Chai for Target
shoes: Liz Claiborne (from DSW)
necklace: Urban
handbag and scarf: vintage

PS, i finally broke out the tripod for this one, and I think it will be staying put in its little place by the door so that I will be forced to use it everyday. not that I wouldn't want to, it looks great.

I have found my match
30 August 2008

I can't believe fate just had to push me into this lovely designer shoe site. Well, fate is a little bitch. Because now I am lusting after these:

And these:

And these:

Crap.

You will never guess what happened to me.
28 August 2008

I was at my aunt Shelley's the other day, and our dear family friend Janice was there. I think she is technically my grandma's best friend from a long long time ago. Girls, you would love her, she is a spicy lady that isn't afraid to speak her mind who has bright orange hair and wears retro cat eye glasses. Anywho, I was wearing this scarf at the time, and she wondered if I wear scarfs a lot. I said yes, and she said she used to when she was younger, but that now she has a whole box full of them and would I like to have them?!? I SAID YES.

So today while she was visiting the MIA with friends, she dropped off the package at the CTC. I didn't even recognize her voice on the phone because I wasn't expecting her to call. My mom gave her my work number. I put one on immediately, it was just what my outfit was missing.

I haven't even gone through the whole box yet, I am that excited. But here are a few of my favorites so far:

Emma, if you're really nice to me I might even let you pick one out!

Time for some fun
27 August 2008

Birthdays are so much fun. Look what my wonderful Alex got me!

We are best friends now.

I don't even know what I plan to make first! It has got to be good. Cakes, cookies, MUFFINS! Meatballs, homemade bread! Pizza dough! Martha Stewart's favorite cupcakes!

Look out everyone, this could get crazy (or delicious...)!

It's serious time.

A serious day of shooting calls for a seriously good outfit. That I can breathe in. And lots of deodorant...

Vintage little boys' suit coat

Vintage gold belt

*this is by-far my coolest wardrobe remix post!*

The State Fair!
19 August 2008

Emma and I went to the MN State Fair Fine Arts Preview Night, which is basically an opening for the fine arts competition participants. Of which, I am one. And low and behold, I won First place! Surprise!

Here is my triumphant pose, as captured by Emma:

Emma got a little excited with the pictures-taking.

And of course, we had to get celebratory State Fair chocolate malts!

Oh man, what should I even buy with my prize money?!? A couch?!?!

More wardrobe_remix

IMG_4748, originally uploaded by avallant.

Dress and gold belt are vintage
gold clutch from H&M
sandals from Urban Outfitters

This is also something I wore to work today, except without the gold accessories, with a black cardigan and brown flats instead of sandals.

I am still not sure if I am going to do this everyday (post my outfits, I definitely plan to photograph myself everyday). I still feel a little awkward about it. I mean, when sally jane does it, it doesn't seem so conceited to me, because she has to photograph them to put them on her ebay shop. But I don't know... I feel funny putting myself on my own blog everyday. I want to do more than just that. What do you think? More fashion? I can lay off if you want.

Since I've been boring you all with my own personal shelter porn lately, I think I should switch gears here and share something new! Aside from loving furniture design and art (which is of course, design) I also love fashion! I am so original! But if you haven;t heard of it, there is a group on flickr called wardrobe_remix, where people show what they are wearing and how they are wearing it. There's a lot of pride associated with getting something cheap, on sale, vintage, or even free! And on wardrobe_remix, you're allowed to brag, too. Show off your favorite party outfit, or oldest most sentimental band t-shirt.

I am proud, too, to say that this is my very first wardrobe_remix post! I figured that since I finally got my own blog, that I might as well get my own flickr as well. Get ready everyone with flickr accounts! Prepare for comments up the whazoo (and, hopefully, lotsa cute remixes)!

hello, lover
15 August 2008

So I went to the MCP today to get in line 2 hours before their sale opened. But there was only one guy with his beach chair reading a book, all set in front of the door. So I got some coffee and walked around and I found some pretty amazing stuff. A cute ceramic and gift shop called two 12. I hung out there for awhile and looked at the humorous gift cards and lovely wooden kitchen utensils. I asked about the local jewelery.

But really I was waiting for this new (it opened in October) furniture store to open at 11am. Called Spinario, they specialize in mid-century modern furniture and artwork! My favorite! It just so happens that the new Apartment Therapy Minneapolis blogger recently posted about them, here. I love this place. I talked to the owners, Peter and Caitlin for almost a half hour about furniture, the MCP closing and art (Caitlin's a painter). Then we all went around the corner to stand in line for the sale again...

When the doors opened and I got inside, it was a free-for-all. I basically grabbed whatever I could gets my hands on and then weeded out my pile later. Apparently I really like photo-collages, so here's another one of all of the sweet books I managed to get:

The pile of books on the left are all signed too! Either by the photographer or George Slade, the former-artistic director (crying omg!) I can't quite remember, it is all such a blur, but I think I saw George wearing a humorous-arts-inspired-graphic-tee and helping to sort everything out in the gallery pre-sale.

I also got two of these red plastic chairs that used to reside in the education spaces of MCP for just three bucks:

But the upside to all of this is that hopefully, the now for lease space will go to another up-and-coming gallery or studio space, I heard gossip of someone thinking of resurrecting a smaller version of the MCP (like back in the day when it was called pARTS and basically just the gallery, no education or bookstore). We will see what the future holds.

(This is where everyone clasps their hands and prays for the not-for-profit Twin Cities arts community of which we are all so dependent on, or at least on which our future careers should be dependent.)

My bookshelves! I will show them!
14 August 2008

We finally put together and stocked the bookshelves! And now we have a lovely library! Although I really feel like I had more books than this. And those are both Alex's and my book collections combined. On the other hand, I'm sure it won't take me long to fill them completely to their tippy-tops!

How I know this: Because the MCP is closing, they are having a liquidation sale. They are selling EVERYTHING in their whole space, except for darkroom equipment which they are trying to donate to the U of M so that they can continue to be a resource to photographers in the cities. That means major discounts on all of their artist and photography books! Sad I know, but I am totally taking my very first paid vacation day tomorrow to go! Anyone want to go with me? And then to the beach to read said books? Yes?

New header!
13 August 2008

Look at my new dotluv blog header! Isn't it nice? I found this "generic screen gazebo" on google images and loved it. I for some reason love technical illustrations and the drawings in instructions, too. So much so that I plan on getting one as a tattoo someday. I have a plan for that.

More exciting news later!

studio.luv
10 August 2008

HOLY CRAP WE FINALLY HAVE A STUDIO! AND I AM MAKING THIS POST IN IT RIGHT NOW!

Alex and I painted the studio today (it was an awful dark sage green color) even though it says not to in our lease. We think we will try to trick them and say "no no, we never painted this room, it was like this before!" OR paint it back before we move out (we took copious notes on the existing paint color, as they had extras in the basement that we could match it to). We haven't decided what we will do yet. But there is plenty of time to feel that out later.

I was seriously stifled with the previous paint color guys, I don't think I would have EVER been able to make work in there... awful. Now there is light and room to move around now that we have gotten all of our shit out of there. ANYWAYS, please take a look at the lovely pictures below of our lovely new studio. The desks are Melltorp from Ikea and I LOVE THEM.

As you can see, I have already personalized my half...

There will be bookcases on this wall as soon as we build them (below). And then fill them with stuff!

In conclusion, Alex and I managed to do all of this in one day:

1) go to Eagan to borrow my parents Dodge Durango
2) go to home depot for the paint and paint supplies
3) go to Ikea to get the two desks and three Billy bookcases (which were heavy!)
4) return home to unload all of the stuff and paint the studio
5) shower
6) go back to eagan to return Dodge Durango
7) return home again
8) grill delicious hot dogs and veggie dogs on the grill for dinner on the porch with baked beans and tom collinses (yummy!)
9) hold on just long enough to watch some olympics then
10) pass out

It has been a busy day. And tomorrow's monday...

I can haz table?
05 August 2008

Guess where Alex and I picked up this cutie-patootie? It wasn't in a furniture store...

It wasn't in a vintage store...

And it certainly wasn't purchased online... We found it...

IN THE TRASH. Yups, in the trash. Or well, next to the trash. And the top isn't even that scratched up! It needs some polishing and a new knobby for the drawer, but it is soooo perfect! It is the perfect height and length for our couch, Marta. I can't even believe no one had the decency to craigslist this sucker. This little baby is so worth it.

This is my newest obsession. Furniture. And everything that comes with getting furniture, like navy living room curtains in the clearance section of IKEA, and plastic reindeer ornaments from antique stores in Stillwater, MN (I obviously have a lot of posts up my sleeve) more to come.

shoes.luv
04 August 2008

I have a problem here, people. I have to say that it seems unlike my dear friend Emma, I do not wear all of the shoes that I own. No. Which is a very disappointing thing indeed, because now I have to convince myself to get rid of some. Is it possible to choose? And if so, how do I choose which ones over which others? This is a very hard thing to do for a girl. "How does this always happen to me?" I ask myself. "Why can't I just only buy the shoes that are cute AND I will wear?" Well, you see... this is why, I think.

Oh Steve Madden! It MUST be all your fault! All four pairs of flats you see up there are totally Steve Maddens. "What type of tragic shoes-hoarding spell have you put upon me Steve Madden?"

Anywho. I need a vote here. Which one should I get rid of? I absolutely can't get rid of the little gray lovelies to the far right, because I just bought them yesterday. Help. Okay, go.

Saddest news for my first real post...
01 August 2008

Jocelyn Chase "Jacob Yuzna, Filmmaker, 2008"

The Minnesota Center for Photography announced on Wednesday, July 30th 2008, that it would be closing its doors after a years-long struggle of operating in the black. A nationally and internationally renowned gallery and photography center and resource, it will be gravely missed in our community. The icing on top of the cake for this one is that all of the work that was scheduled for exhibition this year, including the lovely and talented Jocelyn Chase above, will be cancelled. Never to be seen at the MCP... ever. Oh, the humanity!

What will photographers do now? Go print at Eric's, I guess...

More work that will never be shown at MCP:

Avye Alexandres "Sorting the Coats, 2007"

Abinadi Meza "The Hypnotist's Refrain, 2007"
